Be Disobedient in Your Job Search, Says Renowned Author, Peter Weddle
Peter Weddle’s new book, A Multitude of Hope: A Novel About Rediscovering the American Dream, offers a provocative take on the job search. With 12.5 million Americans unemployed, and a stagnant jobless rate of 8.1 percent, Weddle’s overall premise – that “career security” is non-existent in today’s economy – holds a lot of weight. The book, which chronicles the plight of three out-of-work Baby Boomers, prompts readers to practice what Weddle calls, “economic disobedience.” According to his premise, economic disobedience is the practice of “refusing to accept the “boxes” employers try to put us in.” Weddle counters that these “boxes” limit people’s ability to achieve the career success that is within their control. Last week I had the opportunity to present at the 14th annual compliance conference in Phoenix. The event was organized by the Arizona Affirmative Action Association and attended by a large number of compliance managers and recruiting specialists from various organizations in the area. Compliance Officers from the OFCCP district, including the district director, presented during the conference covering a broad range of issues such as OFCCP priorities, review of the regulations, case studies, best practices and more. Strong Jobs Report, Despite Slight Rise in Unemployment Rate – What Does this Mean for Job Seekers?
Although April’s unemployment rate rose to 9%, as compared to last month’s rate of 8.8%, the U.S. economy seems to at least be showing some signs of recovery with the addition of 244,000 jobs; far more jobs than expected, as reported by the Department of Labor. Higher oil prices and fears of a slowdown in the economy didn’t’ seem to deter employers from adding jobs across many industries. We’re also seeing similar trends, with recent month over month increases in job postings on America’s Job Exchange’s Career Exchanges, which cater to multiple industries and job seeker segments.
