Last week I had the opportunity to present at the 14th annual compliance conference in Phoenix. The event was organized by the Arizona Affirmative Action Association and attended by a large number of compliance managers and recruiting specialists from various organizations in the area. Compliance Officers from the OFCCP district, including the district director, presented during the conference covering a broad range of issues such as OFCCP priorities, review of the regulations, case studies, best practices and more. Although April’s unemployment rate rose to 9%, as compared to last month’s rate of 8.8%, the U.S. economy seems to at least be showing some signs of recovery with the addition of 244,000 jobs; far more jobs than expected, as reported by the Department of Labor. Higher oil prices and fears of a slowdown in the economy didn’t’ seem to deter employers from adding jobs across many industries. We’re also seeing similar trends, with recent month over month increases in job postings on America’s Job Exchange’s Career Exchanges, which cater to multiple industries and job seeker segments.

According to a new study, The New Unemployables, a joint research project by Boston College and Rutgers, after a job loss, people 50-plus are less likely to get a new job than their younger counterparts, and many are opting for part-time employment in lieu of full-time work. The re-employment outlook for older workers who have been recently laid off is far more discouraging, leaving many to quit their job search altogether. Read more…

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics issued its February unemployment numbers today which shows some signs of improvement to the economy.
The unemployment rate improved to 8.9% in February, from last month’s 9.0%. And the jobs outlook improved with the economy gaining 192,000 jobs in the month. If you look at the past several months, the unemployment rate has improved by a percentage point since a high of 9.8% in November. Read more…

Most corporations have a business mandate to establish hiring practices that reach candidates regardless of race, color, or national origin. For many, this diversity recruiting process is dictated by equal opportunity employment regulations (EEO). The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) issued a breach notice today to Employ Media, along with alliance partner DirectEmployers Association and its sponsoring organization The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM). The notice stated that they “failed to operate and manage the .JOBS TLD (top level domain) in a manner that was compliant with the .JOBS Charter.” Read more…

The national unemployment rate currently holds at 9 percent but for Gulf War-era II veterans in particular, those that served since 2001, it’s as high as 15 percent, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Read more…

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) just released January employment results. Unemployment fell by 0.4 percentage points, brining unemployment down to 9 percent. The BLS reported that while unemployed persons decreased by 600,000 to 13.9 million, the labor force remained unchanged. Read more…

Nation’s unemployment rate remained steady at 9.6% and the number of unemployed workers remained mostly unchanged at about 15 million in September. Overall nonfarm payroll employment edged down (-95,000) as employment shrunk in the public sector (-159,100) due to unexpected loss of state and local government jobs and expected reduction of temporary census workers.
