America’s Job Exchange President, Rathin Sinha, was recently interviewed by Jim Zarroli of the National Public Radio for the Morning Edition segment. For this story, Sinha discussed some of the challenges facing job seekers today and why getting a job in this economy is so tough.
One of the major challenges for job seekers is that employers are being more careful in their search. With the abundance of applications they receive, they are looking for employees who are an exact match to the job requirements they have.
Sinha also explained that location can be a challenge, especially when job seekers apply to jobs that would require relocation but their positions are not covered by employer paid relocation. In times like these, employers want to save costs and often would hire local candidates instead of paying relocation costs – especially for low to medium scale positions.
So how can job seekers navigate through these challenges and stand out in the crowd?
Emphasize the qualities you have that directly relate to the job you are applying for. For example, if you are applying to an administrative assistant position for a high-tech company, highlighting your experiences not only as an administrative assistant, but also any experience you have at in high tech may give you the edge you need, and show employers how your background is a great fit for the position you are applying to.
If you’re open to it, plan for relocation. If you are applying to jobs that would require you to move, consider whether or not you will be able to finance a move yourself, and be prepared with a plan to discuss if relocation does come up. Employers may not have the budget to move you, but if they reach out to you, you should at least know whether or not you can move on your own, saving yourself valuable job searching time.
Don’t give up on yourself. Employers are looking for highly motivated people who are going to bring energy and great ideas to their company. Companies need to stay competitive and have great ideas to stay afloat in today’s market, so by having a positive attitude during the job search process, that will most likely help you to land a great new job
