New Year, New Resume

If you are serious this year about finding a better job, or at least want to put your resume out there to see if anyone is interested, have you thought about updating your resume online? Many sites, including America’s Job Exchange, offer a resume uploading or building feature, which allows you to maintain an online version of your resume. So why would you want to maintain this?

If you’re in a job that you love… We’re glad you love your job. By taking a few minutes every month to think about why your job is great, and what contributions you make to it, you can not only boost your self-esteem, but create some potential talking points for your annual review. Documenting what you’re doing now will also help you when somewhere down the line, it’s time for a change and you begin your job search again.

If you’re in a job that you tolerate… If you don’t love your job, it is not a bad idea to be prepared to look for a new job. Start by researching what you want your next career move to be. Find out what companies have jobs available and what the salary is. This information will allow you to make an informed decision as to whether or not you are ready to make a move. Once you have done this, update your resume to reflect experience that is relevant to the job you want to have.

If you’re in a job that you don’t like… It’s time to take action! You spend a lot of time each day at work, so if you are not happy and do not think that the situation is going to improve, it may be time to pursue other opportunities. Begin to look for jobs online and consider what the requirements are for those jobs. Spend a few weeks updating your resume to reflect how your experience meets those requirements. If taking a course or finishing a certificate could give you the training you need to get your dream job, now may be a good time to pursue it. As soon as your resume is updated, spend as much time outside of work applying to relevant jobs. It may take time, but it will be worth the effort to be in a job that you love.

If you’re unemployed… You probably already have a resume written, but is there anything you are currently doing that you can add to make it more current? Include experience like volunteer work or freelance projects for friends and family (paid or unpaid). Many employers want to see that you are motivated and keep busy, even when you are out of work. A few simple updates to your resume could make a difference to a potential employer.

Job searches can take months. If you are still in a job, it’s a good idea to remain discreet in your search and to keep up your efforts at work. Many job search websites give you the option to control who can see your resume, so take advantage of these features. If you are out of a job, look for opportunities to fill in the gaps in-between jobs. You can reach out to your network and search online for ways to stay busy. No matter what situation you are in, it is a good idea to have an updated version of your resume to apply to jobs with. When you are ready to put your resume online, our Resume Upload feature or Resume Builder tool can help you to prepare for your job search. Best wishes! Amie Roemer America’s Job Exchange
