On May 25th America’s Job Exchange co-sponsored a Veterans Job Fair in conjunction with The New England Center for Homeless Veterans, Northeastern University, JobNet, Boston’s One Stop Center and the US Department of Veteran Affairs Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment’s VetSuccess. The event was held in Boston, MA at Northeastern University’s Cabot Cage. There were close to 100 employers in attendance and close to 500 job seekers.
In the past this job fair was held at the facilities of the New England Center for Homeless Veterans. Attendance was typically about 25 employers and about 150 job seekers, so from an attendance stand point this year’s job fair was an astounding success. Employers in attendance ranged from small local business, fortune 500 companies and several US Government Agencies. They were looking for a variety of different types of positions including insurance/financial services sales, IT positions, engineers, administrative support and security related positions. Job seekers that attended had diverse backgrounds, training and experiences ranging from security, engineering, logistics and human resources. The employers that attended were very pleased with the turnout. One employer I spoke with said they made a hire at the event and several others stated they were happy with the turnout and the quality of candidates they were able to meet.
As a nation we need to pay more attention to the challenges our veterans face to find meaningful employment when they return from active duty. Over 80% of jobs in the military have equivalent jobs in the corporate world, yet the unemployment rate for our returning service men and women is exceedingly high. My experience at this event has shown me that our returning veterans have the skills and desire to be productive members of the civilian workforce if given the opportunity.
Therefore, I recommend all employers search for all appropriate opportunities to reach out to the veteran community on a local level to find qualified candidates for open positions. America’s Job Exchange was proud to co-sponsor this job fair and we look forward to other opportunities to help our Veteran’s find the meaningful employment opportunities they deserve.
